Cleaning with Baking Soda

A while back we did a post on Cleaning with Vinegar.  I thought I would follow it up with a Baking Soda version.  Cleaning with something we all consider a kitchen staple is an easy and usually more inexpensive way to take care of everyday tasks.

1. Remove stains from plastic food containers

To clean and freshen your plastic containers, wipe with a clean sponge sprinkled with baking soda. For tougher stains soak in a solution of 4 tbsp. of baking soda and a quart of warm water.

2. Refresh a smelly fridge

Baking soda will absorb strong food odours so they don’t linger or transfer the odour to neighboring foods.

3. Clean fruits and veggies from the grocery store

Mixed with water, baking soda can remove the dirt and the waxy coating that comes on produce from the grocery store.

4. Kitchen surfaces

Combine baking soda with water to clean countertops, sinks, microwaves, range hoods and cooking utensils.

5. Deep cleaning extra greasy dishes and pans

Get rid of baked on food by super charging your dish soap with a sprinkle of baking soda.

6. Revive stale-smelling sponges

Soak these kitchen staples in baking soda and water to freshen them up so you can use them a little longer. But remember, you should still toss your sponges every two to three weeks, depending on use.

7. Removing smells from upholstery

Remove smells from the upholstery around your house by sprinkling the surfaces with baking soda, letting it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuuming it up.

8. De-stink pet beds

You can use the same process as above for your pets favorite place to sleep! Sprinkle, wait 15 minutes and vacuum.

9. Give new life to old toys

Clean the mess left on toys by your little ones hands by wiping them with a sponge dipped in a baking soda and water solution.

10. Scrub a crayon-covered wall

When you kids decide to redecorate with crayons all over that wall you just painted, scrub the surface lightly with a damp sponge sprinkled in baking soda.

11. Banish mildew from bathrooms

Scrub your tub, tile, sink and shower curtain with a damp sponge and baking soda. Rinse to reveal gleaming surfaces.

12. Brighten dingy looking laundry

Whites and colors will come out of the washing machine brighter by adding a cup of baking soda to your load.

13. Unclog a drain

Clear your drain by pouring a 1/2 cup of baking soda down it, followed by a 1/2 cup of vinegar. It will foam.  Wait five minutes, then flush with hot water.

14. Eliminate the odour from garbage cans

Some baking soda in the bottom of your garbage can to fight trash stink.

15. Clean up a garage oil spill

Pour on a little baking soda on the spill and scrub with a wet brush to make it disappear.

16. Scrub a dirty BBQ grill

Clean the cooking grime on your BBQ by sprinkling some baking soda on brush used to clean it before you scrub away the mess.

17. Cleaning dirty patio furniture

Give patio furniture a wipe-down with baking soda and water.

18. Linen closet smells

As with the fridge, an open box of baking soda placed near your sheets and towels can fight musty smells.
