Smokehouse Burgers with Caramelized Red Onion and Burger Sauce

Here I am experimenting with burger flavours again.  With a fresh bottle of liquid smoke in the cupboard it was destined to be added to these burgers.

These burgers again received kudos from Chris and Dillon and will be added to our burger rotation!

Here is (hopefully) everything I used to make them!

I started with the onions because I knew they would take a good 20 minutes.  I put them in my frying pan with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and let them cook over medium high heat until browned and caramelized, about 20 minutes.

Next, I added the ground beef, cheese, liquid smoke, Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper (optional) in a large bowl.

And mixed, by fork and by hand, until it was well combined.

I formed balls of the meat mixture, about 1 cups worth, and placed them individually into my patty maker.

And pressed them into burgers.

I was only cooking 4 for dinner when I made them so I wrapped and bagged the remaining burgers to freeze for the weekend.

Next, I mixed the mayonnaise, BBQ sauce and liquid smoke in a small bowl to make the sauce.

We had a severe thunderstorm warning/watch last night, so I decided to just fry the burgers rather than chance being caught grilling in a storm!

Once cooked through, I placed the burgers on the buns, spread the top half with the sauce and scooped the caramelized onions on top!
