Thanksgiving Recap

I thought with our Canadian Thanksgiving being this coming weekend… October the 8th (and yes, I do know it seems early, especially to those of you in the US!)… I would do a recap of some of our favourite holiday recipes.  There are some things you just have to have with your turkey dinner…. stuffing, mashed potatoes, good gravy, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie…. you get the picture!

Here are some of our previous posts featuring our all time favourites, and well loved, Thanksgiving/holiday recipes!



I guess it only makes sense to start with the turkey!  With buying myself a brand new conventional/convectional stove/oven a year or two ago I cooked my turkey using the convection settings…. here is the post outlining how and what I did to cook my turkey this way.

I always cook my turkey ahead of time, carve it and then freeze it with some of the pan drippings so that come the celebration day all I need to do is thaw and reheat it.  With using the pan drippings from when I cooked the turkey the meat stays tender and flavourful for reheating.


And of course…. the stuffing!  Last year I decided to go a different route for my stuffing.  Instead of cooking it in the turkey, I made a Stuffing Ring, cooked alongside the turkey rather than in it…. and it was delicious! It too can be made ahead of time and frozen until the day of your holiday celebration!


Next up is the cranberry sauce.  You can make your own, homemade cranberry sauce fast and easy! And the fact it tastes a whole lot better than the canned, jelly like sauce you can buy, it is worth the time to make your own!


Now it’s time for dessert!!!!  Pumpkin Pie!!!! Yum!  Pumpkin pie is a HUGE favourite for dessert in this family!  Last year I also made it completely from scratch… right down to cooking my own pie pumpkins to make my own filling… and taste wise, it was well worth the time it took to do this! I did it in the crock pot… meaning a start it and forget it method leaving you time to take care of other preparations!

And finally…. the actual pies!  The recipe I use has been used in my family for generations….I can remember it as far back as to one of my grandmothers and it turns out perfect every single time!

  1. This is fascinating because I actually had no idea that Canadian Thanksgiving dinner had the same traditional dishes as in the United States version. I had always imagined Canadian Thanksgiving to be different. Thanks for teaching me something!

      • Way back in the 1980s and 1990s in New England at least, our Christmas dinner was always the same as Thanksgiving dinner. It gradually started to change, with a lot families I knew choosing roast beef or roast ham for Christmas. I remember my Dad once said, “we just finished all the leftover Turkey from Thanksgiving, now we have to start all over again this soon?”

      • That is interesting. The only time we vary from our usual “holiday” Turkey and Ham is at Easter. Then we just as you mentioned… just a nice ham or roast beef and yorkshires. Every one of us could eat turkey every day of the year. I remember as a kid that we would have turkey for my birthday at the start of December, Christmas dinner, turkey for new year’s and then again for one of my sisters birthdays late January! It was a lot of turkey, but we loved it!
